How to Maintain a Drain Cleaning Machine
A drain cleaning machine is a working tool, not a set-and-forget appliance. A few minutes of care after each job keeps cable, drum and motor running for years — and reduces returns for distributors.
1. Clean the cable after every job
Wipe the cable down while it is still out, removing grease and debris. Dirt left on the cable gets pulled into the drum and wears both cable and drum. Rinse with water if needed, then dry before reeling in.
2. Prevent rust
Moisture is the enemy of steel cable. Dry the cable and drum after cleaning, and store the machine in a dry place. A light coat of cable lubricant protects moving parts and makes feeding smoother.
3. Check cutters regularly
Dull or chipped cutters slow the job and strain the motor. Inspect tips before each shift and replace cutters when worn. Keep spare cutters and cable in the van — downtime costs more than parts.
4. Keep the feed mechanism clean
On machines with auto feed (like our SP-HD75 400 drum), sand and grit in the feed mechanism cause jams. Blow it out or wipe it after dirty jobs, and check the drive rollers for wear.
5. Store it right
Store machines upright or on the built-in wheels, with the cable reeled in and the drum closed. Protect the control box and motor from rain. A machine that lives in a van should be strapped down to avoid rattling parts loose.
6. Follow the maintenance schedule
Electric machines need minimal care: check the power cord for damage, keep vents clear, and have the motor inspected annually on heavy-use machines. Manual tools need cable replacement when kinks appear.
