How to Unclog a Main Sewer Line

How to Unclog a Main Sewer Line

A main sewer line clog affects the whole building. Here is the professional process for clearing it, and the machines that do the work.

Know the symptoms

Water backing up in multiple fixtures, gurgling toilets, and slow drains across the house usually mean a main-line clog — not a single-fixture problem.

Step 1: Find the cleanout

Locate the sewer cleanout, usually a capped pipe in the basement, garage or yard. Remove the cap carefully; be ready for water and sewage to escape.

Step 2: Choose the tool

  • Drum machine: electric machine with 50-100 ft+ cable, cutters for roots and solids. Auto feed models (like the SP-HD75 400 drum) let one person run the job.
  • Sectional machine: joins cable sections for the longest runs and toughest roots.
  • Water jetter: blasts grease and scale off pipe walls and flushes debris away.

Step 3: Feed and rotate

Feed the cable into the line while it rotates. Push slowly — forcing cable against a hard blockage can kink it. When you reach the clog, work the tip back and forth to break it up.

Step 4: Verify with water

Run water into the line to flush debris and confirm the flow. For a complete clean, follow with a jetter or camera inspection.

Step 5: Know when to call a professional

If the machine cannot make progress, suspect a collapsed pipe or a serious root mass. Professional camera inspection avoids damage and wasted effort.
